Abstract

In this article, we study the determinants of the demand for mobile telephone networks using observations on 64 countries. More specifically, we estimate the access demand by exploiting the fact that the subscription rate of a certain country would depend on some country-specific factors where all members in the country face the same values. These country-specific factors are the tariff systems of a country, national wealth, the levels of technological development and industrialization, fixed line facilities, and so on. It turns out that the price effects are not strongly revealed in our study. On the other hand, the probability of subscribing to telephone networks is positively correlated with per capita GDP and the number of fixed lines per person.
