Abstract

Since the last three decades, Korea exerted utmost efforts to expand and strengthen its national infrastructure with focus on the transportation network, and is now undertaking unprecedented bridge construction activities with a total of about 40 long-span bridge projects to link some of its 3, 000 islands to the mainland. Since 1990s, issues related to the safety and durability of civil infrastructures resulted in a consensus to adopt approaches for the sustainability of bridges with active development and applications of health monitoring systems for major bridges in the scope of systematic and scientific inspection and management programs. Especially, national R&D programs have been launched recently to promote and prepare for the next generation of civil engineering structures like the Korea Bridge Design & Engineering Research Center (KBRC) and other government-supported research programs. This paper addresses recent development of bridge health monitoring systems in Korea in newly-built bridges with their objectives and characteristics. Innovation of civil engineering using smart structure technology is also reviewed.
