Abstract

Recognising the importance of new product development (NPD) process in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to improve NPD quality, this research aims to analyse the characteristics of R&D activities in SMEs. We first defined 21 NPD activities for SMEs and collected data about them from 250 Korean SMEs in the IT industry. Then we identified the activities required by SMEs considering their actual use and recognised importance, classified them according to the patterns of use, and finally examined the activities significantly related to NPD performance. The research findings are expected to provide a useful basis for improving NPD process in SMEs.
