A graphene oxide embedded sol-gel (GOSG) film was utilized as a substrate for surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI MS). GOSG SALDI MS efficiently generated low-background metabolite fingerprints, especially from crude samples such as a microalgae culture sample.
