News-Driven Discourse and Support for Democratic Norms: Examining Political Knowledge and Tolerance as Moderators

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This study examines how news-driven discourse supports democratic norms using online panel survey data (Ntime1 = 1,058; Ntime2 = 659) in 2023. The findings suggest that individuals incidentally exposed to news are more likely to leave comments or interact with other users’ comments. Political discourse in news-comment sections is negatively associated with the support for democratic norms. Although incidental news exposure leads to political discussions in news-comment sections and diminishes support for democratic norms, this mediation mechanism is mitigated by higher levels of political knowledge and tolerance.
