Abstract

In this paper, hybrid damage indicators are developed to detect damage effectively in the laminated structures and bio-inspired distributed sensor array system with "hands up" algorithm to reduce the amount of acquiring data for localizing the source of AE signal. The hybrid damage indicators demonstrate how hybrid sensors comprising of out of plane displacement sensors and in plane strain sensors can effectively map a composite structure to detect and locate the delaminated zones. Both model and physical sensors are used to provide complete grid coverage to a structural area. It also shows how simple mode shapes can be used to determine the locations of single and multiple delaminations in laminated composite structures. The developed bio-inspired distributed sensor array system with "hands up" algorithm localizes accurately the AE source with a great reduction in the amount of data. Mathematical definition of the binary sensor model and various effective ways of applying the algorithm to large sensor arrays to fast localization of Acoustic Energy sources had been illustrated. Various approaches to use acoustic energy from the sensors for efficient localization of the acoustic energy sources have also been shown.
