Abstract

We consider a cognitive radio network where a secondary user (SU) tries to opportunistically access the channel time unused by the primary users (PUs) to transmit real-time status update packets with delivery deadline. For the radio frequency (RF)-powered SU, the channel occupancy times of the PUs are opportunities to harvest energy, whereas the idle channel times are opportunities to transmit data. Thus, there is a balance characterizing the SU performance in terms of channel occupancy probability of the PUs. We investigate the timely-delivery probability of data packets for the RF-powered SU. Specifically, we reveal the impact of the PU's channel occupancy probability on the timely-delivery probability and packet sojourn time.
