The study of gender differences in physiological variables upon irradiation of therapeutic ultrasound

Abstract

In this study, gender differences in physiological variables were analyzed to evaluate the curative effectiveness of therapeutic ultrasound at different intensities and durations of exposure. The Pulse Transit Time (PTT) was selected as the evaluation parameter for analyzing gender differences according to the irradiation conditions. Therapeutic ultrasound was irradiated to total of 20 subjects comprising 10 males and 10 females. It was applied to the subjects at intensities of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0W/cm2, and for durations of 3 and 5 minutes at each experimental stage. As a result, it was observed that PTT during normal circumstances is greater for male subjects compared to female subjects. Furthermore, it was shown that changes in the duration and intensity of ultrasound irradiation have no effect on PTT increment. It was also observed that upon irradiation, blood vessels demonstrate greater sensitivity to dilation in females than males.
