Abstract

The effects of ultra-violet (UV) irradiation on the crystalline structure and electrical characteristics of triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) pentacene organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) have been investigated. By UV irradiation the crystalline structure of TIPS pentacene was significantly altered, showing a phase transition from polycrystalline to amorphous phase. As a consequence, the field-effect mobility of spin coated TIPS pentacene OTFT was decreased from 2.3 × 10-2 cm2/Vs to 8.7 × 10-3 cm 2/Vs which suggests that to employ TIPS pentacene as an active layer in displays, image sensors and solar cells, a proper UV-protective passivation layer must be integrated in the device to ensure its reliability.
